What is Web 2.0?
| Personal profiles / social networking sites |
Social networking websites are perhaps the fastest growing and most popular way of connecting with people online and encompass the concept of Web 2.0 on every level. Contribution, communication, collaboration and sharing all form the basis of social networking sites, such as www.facebook.com, www.myspace.com or www.friendsreunited.co.uk.
For those that are interested in getting in touch with old friends, and for those that see the Internet as a new way of keeping in touch with current friends or acquaintances, social networking is the latest phenomenon since mobile phone technology to really capture people's interest. From sharing photos, music tastes, greetings, anecdotes, favourite films or books and diary dates, personal profiles can do it all and, of course, can be accessed from anywhere with an Internet connection.
It is so easy to sign up for social networking sites, all you need is a login name and a photo and you're away - though beware, they can be slightly addictive!
In terms of educational use, social networking websites have the potential to offer much in the way of sharing and collaborating pupils' work. Group working can be enhanced by enabling users to share ideas online as well as contact one another at any time and not just in class. Teachers will be able to share homework and lesson notes and pupils will benefit from being able to access their portfolios at any time and from anywhere with just a simple password. Links with parents will also be greatly improved as they will be able to access or view their child's work directly.
It is clear that the Internet is only gaining strength in terms of accessibility for all and social networking sites, blogs, podcasts and wikis all allow users to embrace this power for their own personal use. The technology is easily available and accessible for anyone wishing to have a go!
