What is Web 2.0?
Podcasting is another form of online media delivery and can be done with both audio and video. Podcasters can create their recording and then upload it on to the Internet allowing other people to subscribe and listen. The important thing to remember about podcasts is that they are a series of broadcasts; otherwise they would just be audio or video files - it would be a bit like receiving just one chapter of a whole book. Using an RSS feed to subscribe to a podcast enables the listener to automatically receive new episodes every time one is uploaded to the internet. A lot of people like to use podcasting as a way of creating their own radio stations, which is a good example. Many other examples of ways to benefit from podcasting can be found at www.podiumpodcasting.com.
There are many ways to create podcasts, some more complicated than others. The best way to get started is to listen to some podcasts to get a feel of what they are and how they are put together. Some good examples can be found at www.guardian.co.uk/podcasts, www.bbc.co.uk/radio, www.podomatic.com and www.podiumpodcasting.com.
If you wish to start producing your own podcasts, there are a number of websites that offer free podcasting software, such as Garageband, however the limitations of these are that they can be very complicated for a first time user and are usually Mac specific. There are applications available that are PC based and are simpler to use, such as our own podcasting tool, Podium, which is designed specifically for education.
However you decide to use podcasting, you will find that it is a great medium for getting your voice heard by audiences from near and far.
